A collaborative research network to tackle obesity and metabolic disease related inequalities in East London and beyond.
We bring together clinicians and scientists from across Queen Mary University of London and Barts Health NHS Trust to improve health outcomes for patients through research in metabolism.
Our research programme addresses health challenges facing East London: obesity and related complications such as diabetes, cancer, inflammation, liver disease, and heart disease.
East London's unique demographic profile—characterized by ethnic diversity, genetic predispositions, and economic deprivation—contributes to a disproportionately high rate of these health conditions. Through targeted research studies, we aim to improve patient outcomes and deliver tangible benefits to our community.

Our Goals
Metabolism is the body's process of converting food into energy and essential nutrients. Our clinicians and researchers investigate how dysregulated metabolism can be a cause and consequence of obesity and metabolic diseases.
We recruit study participants from clinics at the Royal London, Newham, Whipps Cross, and Homerton Hospitals. This allows us to work closely with the local community most impacted by these health challenges.
Our commitment extends beyond laboratory and clinical research. We actively participate in community fairs, educating the public about the crucial role of healthy lifestyles in disease prevention.
Through partnerships with local faith-based centers, we aim to launch culturally sensitive health campaigns focusing on metabolic health matters.
We prioritize community engagement, inclusivity, and cultural sensitivity in all our initiatives. By combining rigorous clinical research with targeted outreach, we aim to make a lasting impact on metabolic health in our diverse local communities.
We are committed to cultivating the next generation of scientific talent. Through comprehensive training programmes, personalized mentorship, and access to our expansive network of researchers, we empower emerging scientists to excel in their fields.
Our collaborative ecosystem extends beyond Queen Mary University of London, fostering dynamic partnerships with the National Health Service, innovative pharmaceutical companies, dedicated patient advocacy groups, and key local agencies.
This interconnected approach drives cutting-edge research and ensures our work has real-world impact.
